Manzoni's House

Alessandro Manzoni's House

Via Morone 1, Milan

A small jewel of history and culture nestled in the heart of Milan, an opportunity to rediscover the roots of our culture.

In Via Morone 1, between the Duomo and the Brera district, is the House of Alessandro Manzoni, where the famous Italian writer, poet and playwright lived from 1813 until his death in 1873. Here some indelible pages of Italian literature were born and took shape, including the masterpiece I Promessi Sposi.

The splendid neo-Renaissance style palace embellished with elaborate terracotta decorations welcomes the visitor in a charming courtyard, silent and private; from here you can visit the rooms on the ground floor overlooking a lush garden, then owned by the house. Among these, Manzoni's study has remained almost intact, with a rich library of period volumes, the original desk, and everyday objects that belonged to the writer.

Upstairs, through a path of ten sections, including original furnishings and works of art, portraits and manuscripts, the visitor will be able to retrace the literary successes of Alessandro Manzoni starting from the first printings of the novel I Promessi Sposi. At the same time, he will be able to immerse himself in the joys, sorrows and friendships that marked his long life.

It will be possible to pass through the master bedroom shared by the writer with his first wife Enrichetta Blondel with whom he had ten children and with his second wife, Teresa Borri, as well as the room that hosted Manzoni in the last years of his life. A unique experience to breathe the atmosphere of the nineteenth century and the protagonists who animated this historic residence.

But Manzoni's Milan does not stop at his house: the city is dotted with places that evoke his world and his characters. From the Church of San Fedele, where Manzoni used to pray and where he fell ill in 1873, to the Church of San Marco then overlooking the canal, up to the area of Corso Buenos Aires, a few steps from our Hotel, where the area of the ancient Lazzaretto and the elegant Palazzo Luraschi are located, which houses twelve busts of the characters of the Promessi Sposi in the courtyard.

If you are passionate about literature and want to discover a corner of Milan rich in history and charm, a visit to Casa Manzoni is an unmissable experience.
