Milan at the Theatre

Milan at the theatre: a story that is renewed

From Teatro alla Scala to avant-garde theatres, from opera to drama to the dance performances of the MilanOltre Festival: discover the suggestions and promotions that Best Western Hotel City has prepared for you!

In 1778, after a fire destroyed the Ducal Theatre, the people of Milan rebuilt, at their own expense, with the support of Maria Theresa of Austria, an even more beautiful and majestic new theatre, designed by architect Giuseppe Piermarini.

Thus, the Teatro alla Scala was born, and with it, in that industrious reconstruction, a profound bond between Milan and the theatre—an art form, a pastime, a source of inspiration that the Milanese had woven into the cultural and social life of the city and to which they would never, ever give up…!

After La Scala, the 20th century saw the birth of equally important and innovative theatrical institutions. In 1947, with the founding of the Piccolo Teatro by Giorgio Strehler and Paolo Grassi, Milan established itself as a hub for auteur drama and socially engaged theatre. The Piccolo became Italy's first permanent theatre, marking a turning point in the history of national theatre. Its productions, often focused on political and social issues, laid the groundwork for a new way of making theatre, where reflection on society was combined with artistic quality.

Today, Milan continues to be a crossroads of theatrical trends, with programming that ranges from the classics to the most experimental productions. The Teatro Elfo Puccini, located right in front of our hotel, with its history of innovation, is one of the most beloved spaces for those seeking fresh, contemporary, and provocative theatre. It offers a rich program featuring contemporary performances and avant-garde works that attract an audience eager and open to new forms of artistic expression. Likewise, Teatro Franco Parenti and Teatro Carcano offer a wide range of shows, from drama to dance, to avant-garde performances.

A small historical gem is the Teatro Gerolamo in Milan, nicknamed "the little Scala" for its elegance and horseshoe-shaped structure. Originally born as a puppet theatre, after a long restoration, it reopened in 2017 and today offers a varied program that spans from drama to music in an intimate and charming setting.

For the Milanese, theatre is not just an art to appreciate, but a true social and cultural ritual. Going to the theatre means taking a break from the daily rush, reflecting, feeling moved, and sharing these emotions with the audience in the hall. Theatre seasons are enlivened by passionate patrons who renew their subscriptions year after year, as well as by the many tourists who want to immerse themselves in the culture of the city. Whether it's opera at La Scala, a classical production at the Piccolo, or an innovative show at Elfo Puccini, theatre in Milan is an experience to try and try again.
